Joseph
P. Spina is a Certified Public Accountant
and licensed to practice in the states of
Florida, Louisiana and New York. He is a former
employee of Haskins & Sells, succeeded
by Deloitte Touche. After leaving Haskins
& Sells, he developed the business model
for the Public Accounting firm of Joseph P.
Spina, CPA. Over the years, his practice grew
to 17 professionals and a myriad of representations
of Municipalities, Corporations, Partnerships
and individuals. The practice included audits,
municipal and corporate, federal and state
advisory services along with tax return preparation
and defense before the Internal Revenue Service.
The
company soon found itself in the Management
Advisory Services area, which was effectively
organization and reorganization of various
businesses. As that area grew further into
engagements for Forensic and Fraud services,
the firm declined new auditing clients and
expanded in the consulting area of turnarounds
(corporate renewal).
Mr.
Spina realized that he had developed an interest
in floundering companies. He pursued companies
that suffered a very limited growth, if any.
He represented companies, one being a sport
and race car company. Mr. Spina founded (along
with his Brother-in-law) Champs, that was
sold to Woolworth and today proudly displays
the mark of “Champs” on an international
platform. Mr. Spina would, after being retained,
would determine the strength and weaknesses
of a company, and recommend additional product
lines, which in turn increased sales and the
bottom line (while continually controlling
related costs.) In the area of hotels, marinas,
restaurants and boat companies, Mr. Spina
also succeeded in turnarounds. He designed
and implemented systems and internal controls.
He suggested additional product lines that
were compatible with the company's mission
and objectives while addressing cost control
and reduction. Mr. Spina represented public
companies as a consultant in the entertainment
industry. His engagements were specifically
to write operation manuals and institute financial
controls.
Mr. Spina attended the University of Florida
in Gainesville, Florida while pursuing pre-medical
studies. His studies were interrupted by the
armed services draft. Upon completion of his
service requirements, and after a short two
years of other employment, he returned to,
and graduated from the University of Miami
with both a Bachelors Degree in Accounting
and a Masters of Business Administration in
Accounting. He has been a member of various
social and philanthropic organizations as
well as pastof President of the local Chamber
of Commerce. He has been a Director of a major
bank in Florida, and currently teaches as an adjunct Professor at Keiser University in the accounting and taxation disciplines.
